Miami is famous for its beautiful beaches, and for a good reason. From the white sand to the crystal clear water, the beaches in Miami are some of the best in the world. Miami Beach is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. It offers a wide range of activities like water sports, sunbathing, and beach volleyball. Living in Miami means you can enjoy these beautiful beaches whenever you want. Whether you want a beach full of action, like South Beach or the more quiet beaches in the northern part of Miami Beach or Key Biscayne or even the – clothing optional – Hauler Beach, you’ll be sure find a stretch of sand that fits your preferences within a short drive from anywhere in Miami.

Cost of Living in Miami

Before moving to Miami, it’s essential to understand the cost of living. This could be considered one of the downsides of living in Miami. Unless you are moving from a major metropolitan area like New York City, San Francisco or LA, you are likely the experience a bit of sticker shock when coming to Miami. According to Numbeo, the cost of living in Miami is 15% higher than the national average. Housing is the most significant expense in Miami, with the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment ranging from $1,400 to $2,200 per month. And remember these stats include all of Miami, meaning areas that you are not likely to want to live in. That means that in reality you’ll be looking at even higher housing cost if you want to be in one of Miami’s prime locations (e.g. one of the areas listed below).

Neighborhoods in Miami

Moving to Miami - Downtown

Miami is a large city with many unique neighborhoods to choose from. Here are some of the most popular neighborhoods in Miami:

Education in Miami

Miami is home to some of the best schools in the state. Amongst them are University of Miami, Florida International University, and Miami Dade College for example. If you’re moving with children, Miami-Dade County Public Schools is the largest school district in the state, with over 392,000 students enrolled. There are a multitude of public, private, charter and magnet schools that should fit every need and budget. If you have a certain requirement or need for schooling, you should thoroughly research all details and consider your area of choice based on your preferred school’s location. Miami traffic can be brutal and having to commute to your kids’ school twice a day will quickly put a damper on your enjoyment of this beautiful city.

Transportation in Miami

Miami has some public transportation,  including buses, trains, and a free trolley service in some neighborhoods. Public transportation does not compare to any other major city that has a proper subway system. Miami is a car heavy city. Some areas are quickly becoming more bike-friendly. With bike-sharing programs and bike lanes and trails, biking is quickly becoming a more popular choice of transportation in Miami.

A large variety of real estate options

Reasons NOT to move to Miami

As much as I love Miami and there are lots of reasons to move here asides from the few listed above, there are of course 2 sides to every coin and Miami certainly has it’s “issues” as well. Following are some of the things that aren’t great about Miami and for some people might even be considered reasons not to move here.

  1. As mentioned about, cost of living is pretty high and can be a hurdle for some. If you are however moving from a major metropolitan area, like New York, San Francisco or LA, Miami might actually be surprisingly affordable for you. You can this cost of living calculator for a comparison with any city of your choice.
  2. Traffic: Miami is known for its heavy traffic, especially during rush hour. This can make commuting to work or getting around the city time-consuming and frustrating. Public transportation is almost non existent, so unless you work from home you will be well advised to find housing close to your workplace.
  3. Crime: Miami has a relatively high crime rate compared to other cities in the United States. Some neighborhoods, in particular, can be dangerous, and residents may need to take extra precautions to stay safe. Of course, just like in any other US City, you can easily avoid the areas with the highest crime rates. For more detailed data on crime in Miami, please check the crime section of City-Data.com
  4. Extreme Weather: Miami’s climate is hot and humid, with a rainy season that can last for several months. The city is also vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms, which can be devastating. One of the complaints I hear most from snowbirds and “out of towers” is that they miss they seasons. In Miami the 4 seasons are pretty hot, hot & humid,  very hot & humid and pretty hot & humid, so if you love cool spring or fall days, moving to Miami might not be the best choice for you.
  5. Tourist Crowds: Miami is a popular tourist destination. If you are in very touristy areas, e.g. South Beach, you will be affected by the crowds of tourists. In most local neighborhoods and municipalities however you do not notice the fact that we are a major tourist hot spot at all.
  6. Language Barrier: Miami is a diverse city with a significant Spanish-speaking population. While this can be an advantage for some, it can also create a language barrier for those who do not speak Spanish fluently. Do not be surprised if your supermarket cashier, waiter or bartender address you in Spanish and act like something is wrong with you if you tell them that you don’t speak Spanish.
